Clients want proof, and most beginners have nothing to show

Thousands of people apply for remote VA jobs every week. The ones who get hired are rarely the most qualified on paper. They are the ones who can show a client exactly what they can do. If you are starting out, you may be stuck in one of these places:

  • Every job post asks for experience, and you do not know how to get experience without a job.
  • You have heard of Asana, ClickUp, Notion and Slack, but you have never used them properly.
  • Your Upwork or LinkedIn profile says “virtual assistant” and nothing that makes a client stop scrolling.
  • You send proposals and hear nothing back, and you are not sure what you are doing wrong.
  • You worry about power, internet, getting paid in dollars and being scammed.

This workbook solves the experience problem directly. You create the experience yourself, one realistic client project at a time, inside the same tools clients use.

Why I built it this way

After nine years in banking and a long career break at home with my children, I had to rebuild my career from Lagos with no recent experience to show. What changed things was creating work samples that proved what I could do.

This workbook turns that approach into a five-week plan you follow at your own pace. Every week you complete practice tasks for realistic clients, such as a wellness coach, a skincare brand and a weekly podcast, and every finished task goes straight into your portfolio.

It is written for the Nigerian reality, so it covers backup power and internet, time zones, receiving dollars, and the scams that target Nigerian freelancers.

By the end of the five weeks, you will be able to

01

Work confidently in client tools. Set up projects and workspaces in Asana, ClickUp and Notion, and explain your work in short Loom videos.

02

Build systems clients trust. Write clear SOPs, manage calendars and booking pages, organise client folders and write professional emails.

03

Create social media content. Design a Canva carousel, write a caption that gets saves, and schedule it with a free scheduler.

04

Communicate like a remote pro. Use Slack and Microsoft Teams well and send updates that keep clients informed without being chased.

05

Stand out to clients. Choose a niche, build Upwork and LinkedIn profiles, set prices and write proposals that get replies.

06

Show a finished portfolio. Complete a full client project and present it in a 3 to 5 minute Loom walkthrough.

Creator of @productmum · Lagos, Nigeria

I am Frances, the mum behind @productmum. I spent nine years in banking at Zenith Bank, took a long career break to raise my children, and then rebuilt my career from Lagos around AI content creation and automation.

Everything I teach comes from work I have actually done: a full AI wedding advert for Souvenir Gifts Haven that is live on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, a website for Cakes and Bites bakery, a client intake automation for a counselling practice, and the AI job finder I built for my own remote job search.

I write my guides for beginners because I remember how confusing it was to start. I explain every new word in plain English, I tell you what each tool really costs, and I show you the mistakes I made so that you can avoid them.
